Water kiosk in Kitui County
Our project partner "Hardcore Help Foundation" and their local partner Fundifix will build a water kiosk in Kitui County in Kenya to ensure a sustainable drinking and service water supply for the approximately 1000 inhabitants.
Current situation
In Kitui County in south-eastern Kenya, about 1.14 million people live on 24,385.1 km². Three quarters of the population depend on small-scale agriculture and livestock farming. Almost 90% of the households there have no direct access to clean water.
There is only one water point within a radius of three kilometres, which is used by up to 1000 people, especially in the dry periods. The communities face enormous challenges, not only because of limited working hours of the vendors, but also the periodic contamination of the water by E. Coli. This is because people and livestock have to share the water point.
Our measures
FundiFix will build a water kiosk with two standpipes for domestic use. This will physically separate domestic and livestock taps to avoid further contamination. The water kiosk will also include an automated solution so that users can collect water around the clock.
The project also aims to convert water collection to a solar-powered system in the long term.
Construction of the water kiosk has already started and is expected to be completed by the end of September.
