Child Protection Education
TOOLS FOR LIFE contributed €13,136 to the PROBONO project “Child Protection in Tanzania.” Two schools in Dar es Salaam and Mwanga offered classes and workshops on children’s Rights.
Current situation
Despite years of steady economic growth, Tanzania remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Many families are forced to rely on their children earning an income. Working conditions for children are often incredibly precarious. Too often this means that they are exposed to abuse and violence. Furthermore, corporal punishment continues to be widely-used. Although Tanzania does have child protection laws on the books, both awareness and enforcement are inadequate.
Our measures
The Tanzanian women’s and children’s rights organisation AJISO twinned with our partners at PROBONO to sponsor training in children’s rights and child protection at two secondary schools. TOOLS FOR LIFE contributed €X,XXX to the project. Participants of the courses that took place at both Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro Girl’s School in Mwanga and Mbonea Secondary School in Dar es Salaam developed a range of child protection guidelines and then decided which of them to adopt. Child protection clubs provided students with a space to actively grapple with the topics of children’s rights and child protection. Both teachers and parents were shown pedagogical alternatives to corporal punishment. The organisations worked together with public authorities to establish corresponding support systems. The project concluded in April 2020.
