Sustainable Kindergarten project in Hai District

The Sustainable Kindergarten project in Hai District, Tanzania, provides approximately 60 children with a clean kindergarten equipped with solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system. TOOLS FOR LIFE supports the project with €10,000. The project was operationally carried out by our partner organization Engineers Without Borders e.V. and other local organizations.

Current Situation

The Trinity Academy, a preschool and primary school with 240 students, including 17% orphaned children, is committed to sustainable operations. Currently, the youngest students aged 3-6 years are housed in inadequate classrooms. Preparations for the construction of new classrooms began in August 2022. The site for the planned kindergarten is located on the school premises, and the foundation has already been poured according to the plans of a local architect. The project is being executed operationally by the partner organization Engineers Without Borders e.V. and local stakeholders.

Our Actions

The TOOLS FOR LIFE Foundation is pleased to be part of a groundbreaking project in Tanzania aimed at sustainably improving the living conditions of children. In spring 2023, the shell construction of a kindergarten was completed, planned in close collaboration with local architects and Engineers Without Borders e.V. Special attention was given to the installation of water pipes and a solar system to facilitate future use. In the second phase of the project, the focus was on water supply and sanitation facilities. To create a sustainable solution, a rainwater harvesting system was installed. The collected water is used for various purposes, including irrigation, cleaning, and hygiene. An innovative system allows rainwater to flow directly into the toilets, enabling immediate flushing and handwashing, a significant contribution to improving hygiene conditions. Furthermore, a drinking water tank was installed, connected to the local water network to provide clean drinking water to the children at all times. In the third phase of the project, Engineers Without Borders experts traveled to Tanzania to install a solar system. This system powers the kindergarten with electricity for lighting and the water pump and consists of 16 solar panels, an inverter, and a battery storage system. Exchange with local electricians was crucial to ensure that the system can be properly maintained and repaired when needed. With the completion of the project, further improvements were made, including the establishment of rest areas, beautification of the outer wall, and vegetable planting in the garden. Over 30 children have already enrolled in the kindergarten, and this number will double over the course of the year, demonstrating the importance and success of this initiative.

Conclusion

The project to establish a kindergarten on the grounds of the Trinity Academy in Tanzania is an outstanding example of successful collaboration between the TOOLS FOR LIFE Foundation and local partners. From planning to implementation, great emphasis was placed on sustainability and the needs of the community. By installing a rainwater harvesting system and a drinking water tank, reliable water supply is ensured, making a significant contribution to improving hygiene conditions and the quality of life for children. The integration of a solar system for energy supply enables sustainable operation and strengthens the school's independence from external energy sources.

The background to the project

Tanzania faces diverse economic challenges. Although the country is rich in natural resources, many people suffer from poverty and lack of economic stability. Particularly in rural areas, where a large part of the population lives, unemployment and limited access to education and healthcare are widespread. Children are particularly affected by this precarious situation. Many families struggle to meet their basic needs, leading to malnutrition, lack of education, and increased risk of diseases. Poverty forces many children into labor instead of receiving a school education, and the lack of resources makes it difficult to protect their rights and unleash their full potential.
